Bio
Originally drafted by Geelong late in 2015, Tasmanian defender Ryan Gardner spent three years on the Cats' list without registering a senior game before being delisted. He earned a second chance through the 2019 Mid-Season Draft, where the Western Bulldogs elevated him from their VFL affiliate Footscray following a string of impressive state-league performances. Functioning primarily as a lockdown key defender, Gardner was often tasked with negating the competition's strongest power forwards, relying on his spoiling reach and physical discipline rather than intercept marking or offensive drive. While his limitations with ball in hand sometimes drew scrutiny, his resilience and ability to play a sacrificial role allowed him to become a dependable structural piece in the Bulldogs' backline throughout his tenure at the Whitten Oval.
