Bio
Recruited from South Adelaide with pick 3 in the 2004 National Draft, Ryan Griffen established himself as one of the Western Bulldogs' most dynamic midfielders of the modern era. Possessing a rare combination of elite speed, line-breaking ability, and a penetrating kick, Griffen evolved from a flashy outside runner into a genuine contested ball-winner. His individual brilliance was rewarded with All-Australian selection in 2013 and two Charles Sutton Medals, culminating in his appointment as club captain for the 2014 season. However, the added responsibility proved burdensome during a difficult period for the club, leading to a high-profile trade request to Greater Western Sydney that ultimately precipitated the exit of coach Brendan McCartney and facilitated the arrival of Tom Boyd to the Whitten Oval.
Upon arriving at the Giants, Griffen was tasked with providing a hardened body and veteran leadership to a developing engine room. While his time in charcoal and orange was frequently interrupted by persistent back and hamstring issues, preventing him from consistently recapturing his absolute peak form, he remained a respected figure within the playing group. He played a key role in the Giants' early finals campaigns, often utilised across half-back or through the middle, before retiring at the conclusion of the 2018 season.
