Bio
Drafted by Collingwood with pick 34 in the 2000 National Draft, Ryan Lonie entered the AFL alongside his twin brother Nathan, who was selected by Hawthorn in the same intake. Lonie quickly established himself as a damaging outside runner, utilising a raking left-foot kick to break lines from the wing and half-back. He became a regular in Mick Malthouse's side during the Magpies' resurgence, featuring in both the 2002 and 2003 Grand Final losses to Brisbane. His capacity to kick long goals on the run made him a valuable asset in transition, though he often faced scrutiny regarding his contested ball-winning ability and defensive pressure.
Injuries and inconsistent form saw Lonie struggle to hold his spot in the senior side during the latter stages of his career, particularly as the club looked to regenerate its list. Although listed as a Port Adelaide player in some records due to confusion with his brother Nathan—who played for the Power during this period—Ryan played his entire 123-game career in the black and white. He was delisted by Collingwood at the conclusion of the 2008 season, leaving a legacy as a skilful, penetrating kicker who played a key role in the Magpies' early 2000s finals campaigns.
