Bio
Ryan Turnbull entered the AFL with strong football pedigree as the son of former South Melbourne and WAFL player John Turnbull. Initially recruited via Claremont, he became a stalwart for East Perth in the state league but faced a difficult path to regular senior selection at West Coast, often sitting behind established big men like Paul Harding and Jason Ball. His patience was rewarded in 1994, which served as his breakout year; he played every game of the season and cemented his legacy as a Premiership player, acting as the club’s primary ruckman during their dominant finals campaign.
Standing at 195cm, Turnbull was often undersized compared to the era’s giant ruckmen, but he compensated with exceptional mobility and endurance. He played effectively as an extra midfielder once the ball hit the ground, using his agility to outwork larger opponents and drift forward to impact the scoreboard. While the emergence of Michael Gardiner eventually squeezed him out of the number one ruck spot in the late 1990s, Turnbull remained a reliable depth player and mentor until 2001. His standing in the game is bolstered by a decorated WAFL career, where he won a Sandover Medal and multiple premierships with East Perth.
