Bio
Selected by the Brisbane Lions with pick 12 in the 2011 National Draft, Sam Docherty played 13 games in Queensland before requesting a trade to his boyhood club, Carlton, at the end of 2013. He quickly established himself as an elite rebounding defender, renowned for his ability to read the play, intercept opposition attacks, and drive the ball out of the backline with precise kicking. His influence on the field was significant, culminating in a John Nicholls Medal in 2016 and All-Australian selection in 2017, where he was widely regarded as one of the competition's most effective ball-users.
However, Docherty's career became defined by his extraordinary resilience in the face of severe setbacks. He missed the entire 2018 and 2019 seasons due to back-to-back ACL ruptures, yet maintained his leadership role as club co-captain alongside Patrick Cripps. His return was further challenged by two separate battles with testicular cancer, requiring chemotherapy before he could resume his career. Despite suffering a third ACL injury in the opening round of 2024, he successfully returned for the finals series later that year. By the time his tenure at Carlton concluded in 2025, Docherty was revered across the league not just for his football IQ, but as an inspirational figure who navigated relentless physical adversity with dignity.
