Sam Frost began his AFL journey as the first pick in the 2011 Rookie Draft, joining Greater Western Sydney during their foundational years. The younger brother of former Collingwood defender Jack Frost, Sam initially struggled to find a defined position at the Giants, oscillating between forward and ruck roles before requesting a trade to Melbourne ahead of the 2015 season. It was at the Demons that he truly developed into a key defender, utilising his exceptional athleticism and raw closing speed to man the competition's most dangerous forwards. Despite playing every game in 2019, Frost became a casualty of Melbourne's defensive restructuring—specifically the recruitment of Steven May and Jake Lever—and was traded to Hawthorn to clear salary cap space and roster spots.

At Hawthorn, Frost became a durable pillar of the backline during a significant transition period for the club. Renowned for an unconventional playstyle, he combined traditional spoiling duties with an adventurous, sometimes chaotic, urge to run and carry the ball out of defence. While his ambitious ball use and "heart-in-mouth" dashes occasionally resulted in turnovers, his competitive instinct and ability to recover ground made him a consistent selection for the Hawks. Throughout his tenure in brown and gold, which extended through the 2025 season, Frost served as a physically imposing veteran who provided experience and aggressive checking to a developing defensive unit.
