Honours

Sam Gibson represents a classic example of persistence, arriving at the elite level via a circuitous route. Originally rookie-listed by Hawthorn in 2007, he failed to break into the senior side and was delisted, spending several years dominating the VFL with Box Hill where he eventually became captain. His second chance arrived when North Melbourne selected him as a mature-age recruit, allowing him to debut at the age of 26. Once in the system, Gibson established himself as one of the league's premier endurance athletes. Operating primarily on a wing or in a run-with role, his elite aerobic capacity allowed him to grind opponents down and provide constant outlet running.

His reliability was unparalleled during his time at Arden Street, where he played 130 consecutive games from his debut—a VFL/AFL record for a player starting their career. Despite this consistency and playing every match in the 2017 season, he was delisted by the Kangaroos as the club pursued an aggressive youth-focused rebuild. Gibson was subsequently thrown a lifeline by Adelaide for the 2018 season, adding five games to his tally before hanging up the boots, leaving the game as a testament to the value of mature-age state league recruitment.
