Bio
Sam Gilbert was recruited from the Southport Sharks with pick 33 in the 2005 National Draft, bringing a unique blend of height and athleticism to St Kilda. He quickly established himself as a dashing half-back flanker who could play tall or small, becoming a crucial component of the Saints' formidable defensive unit during the Ross Lyon era. Gilbert played in three Grand Finals between 2009 and 2010, often tasked with high-profile matchups against the competition's most dangerous forwards due to his rare combination of size and speed.
As the club transitioned into a rebuilding phase, Gilbert evolved into a utility player, plugging gaps wherever required. He spent time as a defensive midfielder, a tagger, and even a pinch-hitting ruckman, using his experience to support a young list. While his kicking could be inconsistent, his competitive nature and versatility allowed him to extend his career well into his thirties. He reached the 200-game milestone in 2018 before being delisted at the end of the season, departing as a Life Member and a key figure from one of the club's most successful periods.
