Teams

Recruited as a mature-age rookie from the Port Adelaide Magpies after finishing runner-up in the Magarey Medal, Sam Gray carved out a respectable AFL career through perseverance and versatility. Making his debut in 2014, he established himself as a high-pressure small forward capable of pushing into the midfield to win his own ball. While he often found himself on the fringe of selection, he enjoyed a prolific patch of form late in the 2015 season that highlighted his accumulation skills. Over six seasons at Alberton, Gray became a reliable contributor known for his work rate and cleanliness by hand, playing 96 games for the Power before being delisted at the end of 2019.

Gray was subsequently signed by the Sydney Swans as a delisted free agent, recruited to add experience and goal sense to a developing forward line. However, he struggled to cement a spot in the Swans' best 22, managing just seven appearances across two seasons while competing against a crop of emerging young forwards like Tom Papley. A smart user of the ball with strong endurance, Gray was delisted by Sydney at the conclusion of the 2021 season, finishing his time at the elite level having surpassed the 100-game milestone—a significant achievement for a player who began his journey on the rookie list.
