Recruited by Port Adelaide with pick 47 in the 2017 National Draft, Sam Hayes entered the AFL system as the highly rated U18 All-Australian ruckman from the Eastern Ranges. Standing 203cm, he was viewed as a traditional ruck prospect renowned for his deft tap work and stoppage craft rather than elite mobility around the ground. His development was severely interrupted by injuries, most notably an ACL tear in 2018, which forced him to wait until 2022 to finally make his senior debut. Although he frequently dominated at SANFL level, Hayes struggled to displace veteran Scott Lycett or cement his spot ahead of other developing talls, ultimately leading to his delisting at the conclusion of the 2023 season after 11 games in six years.
