Recruited as a mature-age prospect from the Frankston Dolphins, Sam Lloyd established himself as a crafty medium forward with an innate goal sense and reliable set shot. Though he etched his name into Tigers folklore with a match-winning goal after the siren against Sydney in 2016, Lloyd found himself on the fringe of selection during Richmond's premiership ascent, often dominating at the state league level where he featured in the 2017 VFL premiership. Seeking greater security in the senior side, he was traded to the Western Bulldogs at the end of 2018 and made an immediate impact, topping the club's goalkicking in his first season at the Kennel. Despite proving his ability to perform at the highest level, Lloyd surprisingly announced his retirement while still in contract, departing the game as a popular clubman who successfully bridged the gap between VFL and AFL standards.
