Bio
Recruited from Launceston with pick 50 in the 2005 National Draft, Sam Lonergan was a tough inside midfielder who made his name at Essendon as a contested ball winner and aggressive tackler. The nephew of former Bomber Stephen Lonergan, he was often utilised in a defensive midfield role or as a clearance specialist, enjoying his most consistent campaign in 2011 when he played 19 games. However, he struggled to secure a permanent position in Essendon's evolving engine room and was delisted following the 2012 season. Lonergan received a lifeline from Richmond via the rookie draft to provide midfield depth, but he managed only two senior appearances for the Tigers in 2013 before his AFL career came to a close.
