Teams

Recruited from North Adelaide with pick 8 in the 2012 National Draft, Sam Mayes arrived at the Brisbane Lions with high expectations and made an immediate impact, finishing his debut season top-ten in the Rising Star voting. While the Lions endured a turbulent period of player retention issues during his tenure, Mayes remained a constant figure for several years, utilising his clean disposal and versatility to operate effectively across half-forward, the wing, and eventually as a rebounding defender. He played over 100 games for the club but, after falling out of favour during the 2018 season, requested a trade home to South Australia and joined Port Adelaide.

At Alberton, Mayes struggled to cement a permanent position in a contending lineup, primarily serving as an experienced depth player and utility who could plug gaps in defence or the midfield. Despite dominating at SANFL level for the Port Adelaide Magpies, his opportunities in the AFL side were sporadic, often limited to roles as a late inclusion or medical substitute. After four seasons on the Power's list yielded just 20 senior appearances, he was delisted at the conclusion of the 2022 season.
