Bio
Hailing from Queenscliff, Sam Mortimer’s career was defined by two brief stints at the top level separated by time in the VFA and military football. After booting a goal in a solitary appearance for St Kilda as a teenager in 1911, he disappeared from the VFL scene until his form with the Swan Island engineers caught the eye of Collingwood recruiters four years later. A pacy and clever wingman, Mortimer forced his way into the Magpies' side during the 1915 season, holding his spot all the way to that year’s Grand Final loss against Carlton. He was credited with battling hard in the premiership decider, but it proved to be his final game; he enlisted for World War I less than a month later, ending his football career to serve with distinction in both World Wars.
