Sam J. Reid’s career stands as one of the most unique stories of resilience in modern football history. Originally a Queenslander drafted by the Western Bulldogs from the Zillmere Eagles in 2007, Reid battled chronic injuries and a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes early in his professional life before joining GWS as an uncontracted foundation player. However, persistent shoulder issues forced him into what appeared to be a permanent retirement at the end of 2013. Transitioning immediately into a development coaching role with the Giants, Reid captained the club’s NEAFL side, where his form was so compelling over the next two years that GWS made the rare decision to re-draft their own coach as a rookie for the 2016 season.

In his "second life" as a player, Reid reinvented himself as a disciplined utility, often tasked with shutdown roles on dangerous small forwards or midfielders. He became the ultimate survivor, frequently delisted and re-rookied for list management purposes, yet always fighting his way back into the senior side through sheer work rate and defensive application. This tenacity culminated in 2021 when he finally reached the 100-game milestone—taking a VFL/AFL record 12 years and 9 months from debut to century. He retired for the final time later that year, revered at the Giants not just for his on-field grit, but for a selfless persistence that saw him squeeze every possible drop out of his career.
