Teams

A product of Wodonga, Sam Rowe took a circuitous route to the elite level that tested his resilience both on and off the field. Originally rookie-listed by the Sydney Swans in 2005, he was delisted without making a senior appearance and moved to the SANFL to play for Norwood. His strong form as a tall utility eventually saw Carlton recruit him as a mature-age selection in the 2011 National Draft. However, his start at Princes Park was delayed when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer, requiring surgery and chemotherapy. Rowe recovered fully to make his AFL debut in 2013, initially playing as a forward and backup ruckman before cementing his spot in the side as a key defender.

Rowe developed a reputation as a disciplined, lock-down backman who relied on physical strength and spoiling ability rather than intercept marking. He became a fixture of the Blues' defence during a difficult rebuilding period, often taking the opposition's most dangerous key forward. After 99 games for Carlton, he was delisted at the end of 2018 but received a late lifeline from St Kilda via the pre-season supplemental selection period, following a defensive injury crisis at Moorabbin. This move allowed Rowe to play one final senior match, fittingly reaching the 100-game milestone to secure AFL life membership before his retirement.
