Bio
Recruited from Barooga in the Riverina, Sam Snell was a sturdy centre half-back who anchored St Kilda’s defence throughout the late 1930s. His VFL journey is perhaps best defined by a four-year hiatus taken during the Second World War to focus on his duties as a police constable, a tenure famously highlighted by his receipt of a Royal Humane Society bronze medal for heroically stopping two bolting horses on Bourke Street. Snell returned to the Saints in 1944 and capped off his time at the Junction Oval with a remarkable positional switch, moving forward in 1945 to boot 21 goals—his entire career tally—and finish as the club’s joint leading goalkicker before departing for Preston.
