Bio
Born in Port Melbourne but recruited from the Western Australian Goldfields club Boulder City, Sam Stivey was a diminutive winger who made a fleeting appearance for Carlton at the dawn of the Jack Worrall era. Standing just 170cm, Stivey debuted in the final round of the 1902 season against Essendon and held his spot for the 1903 opener against Collingwood, but he failed to cement a permanent place in the side and transferred to Port Melbourne in the VFA shortly after. Following his brief Victorian homecoming, he returned to the West where he forged a far more prominent sporting reputation as a top-tier umpire, officiating the 1904 West Australian State Premiership match, before serving as a masseur in World War I and competing as a boxer in Perth well into his 40s.
