A talented dual-sportsman who prioritised cricket before a late switch to football, Sam Sturt was a first-round selection (pick 17) for Fremantle in the 2018 National Draft. He announced himself with a three-goal haul on debut in 2020, displaying the natural goal sense and high-marking capability that justified his early selection. Despite this promising start, Sturt's career was heavily interrupted by persistent ankle and knee injuries that kept him on the sidelines for long stretches. A classic medium forward with a damaging left foot and high conversion accuracy, he worked hard to add defensive pressure to his game to satisfy coaching demands. However, unable to secure a permanent role in the senior side, he spent much of his time at the club battling for selection and fitness, offering glimpses of class whenever he broke into the lineup.
