Bio
Recruited from the Murray Bushrangers with pick 27 in the 2008 National Draft, Sam Wright initially began his career at Arden Street as a medium forward. He showed early promise in attack, notably earning a Rising Star nomination in 2010, but ultimately found his true niche after shifting to the backline. Wright developed into a courageous and versatile defender capable of playing on both smalls and medium-sized opponents, becoming a critical component of North Melbourne's defence during the club's consecutive preliminary final runs in 2014 and 2015.
His 2015 campaign was arguably his peak, seeing him finish inside the top ten of the Syd Barker Medal count as an intercepting defender who used the ball efficiently by foot. However, the latter stages of Wright's career were severely hampered by persistent foot and ankle injuries, which forced him to miss the entire 2017 season and restricted his output in subsequent years. Despite multiple comeback attempts, the toll on his body led him to announce his immediate retirement midway through the 2019 season, departing as a respected one-club player with 136 games to his name.
