Recruited from the Geelong Falcons with pick 32 in the 2000 National Draft, Samuel Hunt was a tall key defender who found senior opportunities limited during his time at the elite level. He famously kicked a goal with his first touch in AFL football upon debuting against Collingwood in 2002 and was notably a late inclusion for an injured James Hird in that year's Elimination Final. Despite his physical attributes, Hunt spent the majority of his tenure at Windy Hill playing for the Bendigo Bombers, unable to permanently displace established backmen in the senior side. After being delisted by Essendon, he was thrown a lifeline by his hometown club, Geelong, via the rookie list for the 2006 season. While he failed to add to his senior game tally at Kardinia Park—stuck behind a legendary defensive unit featuring Matthew Scarlett and Tom Harley—he departed as a key member of the Cats' 2007 VFL premiership side.
