Bio
Recruited as a mature-age prospect from the Geelong VFL program, Scott D. Thompson overcame initial doubts about his athleticism to become a cornerstone of the North Melbourne defence for over a decade. Selected with pick 37 in the 2007 National Draft, he wasted little time establishing himself in the senior side, evolving into a gritty, uncompromising key backman. Thompson was best known for his ability to play tall despite being slightly undersized for a key position player, utilizing superior bodywork, tactical nous, and a nagging, competitive nature to neutralize the league's most dangerous power forwards.
His standing as one of the competition's premier defenders was solidified in 2013 when he earned All-Australian selection and tied with Daniel Wells for the Syd Barker Medal as the club's best and fairest. While often tasked with difficult lockdown roles on superstar opponents, Thompson also developed a capacity for intercept marking that made him a dual threat in the back half. He remained a mainstay of the Kangaroos' lineup until his retirement at the end of the 2019 season, departing Arden Street as a highly respected one-club player who squeezed every ounce of potential out of his career.
