Recruited from South Fremantle, Scott Watters established himself as a composed defender with the West Coast Eagles during the club's ascent in the late 1980s. He was a consistent performer across four seasons in the Eagles' backline, known for his disciplined positioning and reliable ball use. However, he departed the club at the end of 1992, narrowly missing out on their maiden premiership success. Watters spent the next two seasons with the Sydney Swans, offering steady service in defence during a rebuilding phase for the club, before returning to his home state to join the newly formed Fremantle Dockers in 1995.

As a classic half-back flanker, Watters was renowned for his neat disposal and ability to read the play behind the ball. His experience proved vital for the inaugural Fremantle squad, where he was appointed the club's first vice-captain to support Ben Allan. He played 26 games for the Dockers over three seasons, providing on-field leadership to a young list before retiring in 1997 with 109 AFL games to his name. Following his playing retirement, Watters translated his astute understanding of the game into a significant coaching career, which included a tenure as the senior coach of St Kilda.
