Bio
Recruited from the Gippsland Power with pick 13 in the 2000 National Draft, Shane Birss arrived at the Western Bulldogs as a highly rated prospect capable of playing across the midfield and half-forward lines. Known for his relentless work ethic and hard running, he developed into a reliable utility and run-with player, though his tenure at the Whitten Oval was significantly hampered by a knee reconstruction in 2004 that stalled his momentum. Seeking greater opportunity after slipping out of the Bulldogs' senior rotation, he was traded to St Kilda for a late draft pick prior to the 2007 season. At Moorabbin, Birss provided experienced depth for Ross Lyon's defensive-minded squad, playing a mix of tagging and defensive forward roles—including an appearance in the 2008 Preliminary Final—before being delisted at the conclusion of that season.
