Bio
Originally recruited from the Western Jets, Shane Ellen began his career at Footscray where he struggled to cement a regular spot in the senior side across three seasons. Traded to Adelaide ahead of the 1996 season, he settled into a role as a reliable, albeit unassuming, defender capable of playing on small to medium forwards. However, Ellen's career is defined by a singular tactical masterstroke during the 1997 Grand Final; with star full-forward Tony Modra sidelined by a knee injury, coach Malcolm Blight swung Ellen into the forward line against St Kilda. The makeshift spearhead booted a career-high five goals—having kicked just three in his previous 38 games—to help secure the Crows' inaugural premiership. While he returned to defensive duties for the remainder of his time at West Lakes before retiring in 2000, his match-winning cameo remains one of the most famous individual performances in Grand Final history.
