Bio
Recruited from South Fremantle with pick 34 in the 2011 National Draft, Shane Kersten served a lengthy apprenticeship at Geelong where he battled injuries and strong competition for spots behind established key forwards. A mobile medium-tall attacker known for his endurance and strong lead-up work, he eventually broke into the senior side but found it difficult to permanently command a place in the Cats' best 22. Seeking a fresh start and a return to his home state, Kersten was traded to Fremantle ahead of the 2017 season. His tenure at the Dockers was defined by a notable mid-career swing to defence, where he was utilised as an intercepting backman after struggling to impact the scoreboard consistently. Despite the positional adjustment offering a brief career lifeline, persistent foot injuries and form issues brought his time at AFL level to a close when he was delisted at the end of 2019.
