Recruited from VFA powerhouse Port Melbourne, Shane McKew was brought to the Lakeside Oval by coach Norm Smith as part of a strategic recruitment drive to harden the Swans' list. He arrived alongside fellow Port product Gary Brice and made an immediate impression, playing 18 games in his debut 1970 season as South Melbourne broke a 25-year finals drought. A tall midfielder for the era at 184cm, McKew was known as a contested ball-winner who offered physical presence and reliable disposal in the centre of the ground. While his senior opportunities dwindled over the subsequent three seasons, he remained a serviceable squad member until his departure in 1973, later establishing himself as a highly successful coach with the Imperials in the Western Border Football League.
