Recruited from Kyabram in the Goulburn Valley, Shane McSpeerin was a rover who debuted for Melbourne in the opening round of the 1971 season against St Kilda. He showed flashes of potential as a goal-kicking small forward options, notably managing a three-goal haul against North Melbourne in 1972, but he found it difficult to consistently hold his place in the senior lineup. Unable to transition from a fringe player to a permanent fixture in the 22, he played sporadically over three seasons before departing the VFL to continue his career with Yarraville in the VFA.
