Stats
Bio
Recruited from Kew Amateurs, Shane Murphy experienced a VFL career defined by a rapid ascent and a heartbreaking conclusion. A lively forward capable of hitting the scoreboard, he made his senior debut in the final round of the 1975 season, booting three goals to immediately bolster his case for September action. In a rare feat, Murphy retained his spot to play in the 1975 Grand Final against North Melbourne in just his third league game, though the Hawks were defeated on the day. He spent the following seasons on the fringe of a powerhouse Hawthorn lineup, struggling to cement a permanent position among a forward line teeming with superstars. His time at Glenferrie Oval ended with a cruel twist in 1978; despite playing in the qualifying and semi-finals, he was omitted from the Grand Final side to accommodate Norm Goss, causing him to miss the premiership victory before he eventually departed the league to represent De La Salle.
