Born in New Zealand, Shane Savage entered the AFL via Hawthorn with pick 75 in the 2008 National Draft. He initially established himself as a running midfielder and forward, earning selection in the Hawks' 2012 Grand Final side, but often found himself on the fringe of a dominant midfield rotation. In search of regular senior opportunities, Savage was involved in a significant exchange during the 2013 trade period, moving to St Kilda as part of the high-profile deal that sent ruckman Ben McEvoy to Waverley.

At St Kilda, Savage transformed his game to become a damaging rebounding defender. Known for his booming right-foot kick and ability to break lines, he became a key architect of the Saints' transition game, evidenced by a third-place finish in the 2015 Trevor Barker Award. He provided stability and drive across half-back for seven seasons, serving as an experienced head in a youthful backline. Savage was delisted at the conclusion of the 2020 season, ending his career as a respected utility who successfully reinvented himself to maximise his time at the elite level.
