Teams

Recruited from Swan Districts with pick four in the 1990 Pre-Season Draft, Shane Strempel was a towering ruck-forward who played just three games for the Brisbane Bears before becoming the centre of one of the 1990s' most infamous training ground controversies. Standing 199cm, the West Australian showed early promise by kicking two goals against Essendon in his second match, but his time at Carrara was effectively ended by a brutal disciplinary session orchestrated by coach Robert Walls. Perceived as having a poor attitude and history of tardiness, Strempel was ordered to box a succession of teammates in a sparring drill that left him bloodied and battered before veteran Brad Hardie intervened to stop the session. He was traded to Essendon at the end of the 1991 season but never added to his senior game tally, ultimately returning to the WAFL to finish his career where it began.
