Bio
Recruited from the SANFL's Port Adelaide Magpies, Shane Wakelin entered the AFL via the 1993 Pre-Season Draft with St Kilda, debuting a year before his twin brother Darryl. A quintessential key defender, Wakelin built a reputation on his discipline, strength in one-on-one contests, and spoiling ability. He became a defensive pillar for the Saints, playing in the 1997 Grand Final loss to Adelaide, but eventually sought a change of scenery after the 2000 season to freshen up his career.
Wakelin was traded to Collingwood to bolster a developing backline under Mick Malthouse. He immediately solidified the full-back position, playing a vital structural role in the Magpies' resurgence that led to consecutive Grand Final appearances in 2002 and 2003. Known for his "safety first" approach and ability to nullify the competition's strongest power forwards, he remained a preferred selection well into his thirties. Despite the emergence of younger defenders threatening his spot in his final years, Wakelin's durability saw him reach the 250-game milestone just prior to his retirement in 2008, cementing his legacy as one of the most reliable stoppers of his generation.
