Bio
Recruited from Mornington, Shane Whelan carried a famous name as the son of Collingwood Brownlow Medallist Marcus Whelan. He burst onto the VFL scene in 1967 as a potent key forward, snagging 22 goals in his first nine games, including a five-goal haul against Fitzroy. Despite this electric start, his scoring output ceased entirely in the following seasons as he was redeployed to the backline, where he found it difficult to hold a regular place in the senior lineup. Whelan ultimately played 20 games over three years before departing Victoria Park, unable to replicate the longevity of his legendary father.
