Bio
Recruited from the Murray Bushrangers via the rookie draft, Shannon Byrnes overcame initial concerns regarding his diminutive stature to forge a successful career as a dangerous small forward. A pacy left-footer with a sharp eye for goal, Byrnes became a key component of Geelong's golden era, renowned for his defensive pressure and ability to crumb off packs. Although he often faced stiff competition for a spot in the Cats' star-studded forward line alongside the likes of Steve Johnson and Paul Chapman, he solidified his legacy as a two-time premiership player, featuring in the 2007 and 2009 flag-winning sides and producing a career-best 35-goal season in 2010.
Seeking greater playing security and a leadership role, Byrnes moved to Melbourne as an unrestricted free agent at the end of 2012. He was recruited to provide mentorship to a young and struggling Demons list, but his time in red and blue was frustrated by a chronic foot injury that severely limited his output. He managed just 23 games for the club before retiring midway through 2014, eventually transitioning into coaching and player development roles.
