Recruited from the North Ballarat Rebels with pick 14 in the 1997 National Draft, Shannon Watt became a staple of North Melbourne's defence throughout the 2000s. Possessing elite straight-line speed derived from a junior athletics background, he was utilised primarily as a lockdown fullback capable of matching the competition's most athletic key forwards. While rarely an offensive threat or a high-possession winner, Watt's value lay in his disciplined checking and ability to spoil in one-on-one contests, often freeing up teammates to provide rebound from the back half.

Watt's career was characterised by his durability and a specific statistical oddity that cemented his name in football trivia. He played 88 games before kicking his first career goal, ending one of the longest droughts in VFL/AFL history with a memorable running shot against Essendon in 2005. Although his disposal sometimes drew scrutiny, he remained a preferred selection for much of his tenure due to his reliability in defensive structures. He was delisted at the end of the 2009 season, retiring as a Life Member of the club who extracted the maximum from his athletic attributes over 153 games.
