Recruited from West Coburg, Sid Meehl took an unconventional path to the VFL having previously played rugby league in Sydney. A versatile defender and follower, he initially struggled to cement a spot in the Melbourne lineup, spending time with Alphington before establishing himself as a regular senior player in 1935. That season highlighted his extreme durability, most notably when he played a full match with a splinter of glass in his eye from an exploded lightbulb, reportedly unaware of the severity until the game concluded. However, his career was ultimately derailed by a run of debilitating injuries, including a toe complaint that restricted his 1936 campaign and a severe ankle infection the following preseason that required multiple operations. Meehl managed just one final appearance in 1938 before leaving the league to captain-coach Terang in country Victoria.
