Bio
Debuting for Footscray in 1987, Simon Atkins developed into a prolific ball-winning midfielder known for his precise disposal and ability to accumulate possessions through the centre and on the wing. A pivotal figure in the Bulldogs' resurgence under Terry Wheeler in the early 1990s, his consistency was rewarded with the Charles Sutton Medal as the club's best and fairest in 1993. Instantly shifting the dynamic of the midfield with his vision and reliable delivery inside 50, he played a crucial role during a period where the club became a regular finals contender.
Despite his standing at the Western Oval, Atkins was traded to Fitzroy prior to the 1995 season. He played out the final two years of his career with the Roys, serving as a senior head in the midfield during the club's financially crippled final campaigns before their merger with Brisbane. Atkins finished his AFL tenure at the end of 1996, remembered primarily as a high-quality distributor who offered class and consistency for the Bulldogs.
