Arriving at Footscray in 1982 as a mature-age recruit from Swan Districts in the WAFL, Simon Beasley brought a reputation as a prolific scorer and a stockbroking background that earned him the nickname "The Pie Man." He immediately established himself as the focal point of the Bulldogs' attack, relying on astute leading patterns, superior body strength in marking contests, and a reliable set shot rather than athletic dynamism. This traditional full-forward playstyle proved devastatingly effective, most notably during the 1985 season when he won the Coleman Medal with a club-record 105 goals and spearheaded the team's charge to a Preliminary Final, though the campaign ended in heartbreak when his late shot against Hawthorn drifted wide.

Despite his lack of pace and occasionally unorthodox methods, Beasley remained a constant goal-scoring threat throughout the 1980s, topping the club's goalkicking list in five separate seasons. His career concluded in 1989 following persistent back injuries, leaving the game with an exceptional average of nearly four goals per match. He remains a cult figure at the Whitten Oval, sitting second on the club's all-time goalkicking table and holding a place in the Western Bulldogs Hall of Fame as one of the most efficient forwards of his generation.
