Bio
A mature-age recruit from the Box Hill Hawks, Simon Taylor was a towering ruckman who provided physical support to Hawthorn’s midfield during the club’s mid-2000s resurgence. Selected with pick 53 in the 2004 National Draft, he primarily operated in a tandem ruck setup alongside Robert Campbell, known for his contested work and willingness to absorb physical punishment. Taylor’s career narrative is largely defined by the heartbreak of the 2008 campaign; despite playing 18 games that year and shouldering significant ruck loads, he was controversially omitted from the Grand Final side in favour of the younger Brent Renouf, forcing him to watch the premiership win from the sidelines. Although he stepped up as the primary ruckman following Campbell's retirement in 2009, a severe leg injury sustained in the 2010 pre-season effectively ended his time at the elite level, leading to his delisting later that year.
