Bio
Originally labouring on Richmond’s list for four seasons without a senior appearance, Simon Verbeek had to take the long road to AFL football via a dominant stint in the VFA with Oakleigh. His second chance materialized when Carlton selected him in the 1989 Pre-Season Draft, reportedly on the recommendation of Oakleigh coach and Blues legend Bryan Quirk. Standing 188cm, Verbeek was a capable half-forward who offered a strong pair of hands and a reliable avenue to goal, notably booting 33 majors across his tenure. Though he played in an era dominated by larger-than-life figures like Stephen Kernahan, Verbeek carved out a respectable niche as a marking target and serviceable role player before departing Princes Park in the early 1990s.
