Bio
Born in Petersham, New South Wales, Spencer Hayman was educated at Scotch College in Melbourne, where he first distinguished himself as a member of the school's 1900 premiership team. He progressed to the VFL ranks via Hawthorn, making his senior debut for Melbourne in Round 2 of the 1906 season. Hayman's brief tenure coincided with a bleak era for the Redlegs, whose rigid adherence to amateurism contributed to a winless wooden spoon campaign during his time in the side. He managed just six senior appearances in the struggling lineup before departing the VFL. Hayman eventually relocated to South Australia, clearing to North Adelaide in 1910, though he remains best remembered by historians for his family legacy; his son, Captain Peter Hayman, was a decorated soldier who was awarded the Military Cross before being killed in action during World War II.
