Bio
A local product from Geelong Amateurs whose parents ran a fish and chip shop in town, Spiro Malakellis overcame a pre-season knee injury to earn his spot on the Cats' list via the 1989 Pre-season Draft. He made an immediate impact, gathering 22 disposals on debut in Round 7 during Geelong's record-breaking 228-point thrashing of St Kilda. Wearing the number 12 guernsey, Malakellis established himself as a busy running player and wingman, capping his rookie season with an appearance in the legendary 1989 Grand Final against Hawthorn. He remained a useful contributor for six seasons under Malcolm Blight, playing 67 games before being delisted at the end of 1994. Malakellis continued his career in the SANFL, where he won a premiership with Port Adelaide alongside his younger brother Tony in 1995.
