Bio
Arriving at St Kilda as a mature-age recruit from the Wimmera town of Murtoa, Stan Brady managed just one season of senior football before the Great War intervened. A versatile ruck rover who proved capable in front of goal, Brady is far better remembered for his correspondence from the front lines than his brief playing stint at the Junction Oval. Writing to his mother from the trenches of Gallipoli, he famously penned the line "it's harder than football here," a sentiment that later inspired the title of a comprehensive history of VFL players at war. He survived the conflict but died tragically young at 34 from pleurisy and pneumonia, standing as one of the key servicemen honoured by the Saints during their wartime adoption of the "Belgium" colours.
