Bio
Recruited from the Collingwood Junior League, Stan "Smokey" Dawson began his senior career at Victoria Park but struggled to cement a regular spot in the Magpies' starting eighteen. After four seasons on the fringe, he crossed to VFA club Preston in 1941, only to return to the VFL system with Fitzroy in 1943 following the Association's wartime suspension. Operating primarily as a half-forward flanker, Dawson proved to be a handy acquisition for the Roys, using his mobility to link up play and hit the scoreboard. His career highlight came in 1944, where he played a key role on the flank in Fitzroy's Grand Final victory over Richmond, securing his status as a premiership player in the club's last VFL flag.
