Bio
Born in Ballarat East, Stan McGregor was a decorated war hero whose brief VFL career came as a mature-age recruit for Geelong. Enlisting as a teenager in 1914, he served with the 2nd Field Ambulance during World War I and was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry near Proyart in 1918, where he directed the evacuation of wounded soldiers under heavy machine-gun fire despite the area being swept by enemy shelling. After returning to Australia, McGregor was recruited from the Ballarat district to join the Pivotonians, making his debut at 28 years of age in Round 2, 1923 against Melbourne at Corio Oval. Standing 179cm, he played just two consecutive senior matches before losing his place in the side, leaving his legacy as one of the league’s courageous servicemen rather than a long-term player.
