Teams

A gifted all-rounder from Launceston, Stan McKenzie arrived at Princes Park with a reputation as one of Tasmania's finest sporting exports, having already represented his state in both carnival football and first-class cricket. After a dispute in the Tasmanian local leagues prompted a move to Victoria, McKenzie broke into the powerful Carlton lineup of 1914, used primarily as a clever half-forward and wingman. He played 14 consecutive games in his debut season, including the Preliminary Final, but suffered the professional heartbreak of being dropped from the Blues' premiership side on the eve of the Grand Final due to indifferent form. His football journey was tragically cut short just a year later; after enlisting as a medical orderly and serving at Gallipoli, Sergeant McKenzie died of appendicitis while on active service in Egypt, leaving him as one of the game's solemnly remembered fallen soldiers.
