Bio
Recruited from the Public Service competition as a 24-year-old mature-age prospect, Molan wasted no time establishing himself at Brunswick Street. He began his VFL life as a dangerous forward, finishing runner-up in the club’s goalkicking in his debut season and contributing heavily on the scoreboard again in 1919. However, his versatility soon saw him shifted to the backline, where he reinvented himself as a stout defender capable of locking down the opposition's best forwards.
Anchoring the defence at centre half-back, Molan became a pivotal figure in the Maroons' golden run during the early 1920s. His reliability and strength in the contest were rewarded with premiership glory in 1922, where he played a key role in the Grand Final victory over Collingwood, followed by another Grand Final appearance in the same position in 1923. A four-time Victorian representative, he retired in 1924 having successfully transformed from a goal-kicker into a premiership-winning defensive pillar.
