Bio
A product of Scotch College and a law student at the University of Melbourne, Stan Neale was a defensive mainstay for "The Students" during their final two seasons in the VFL. Operating primarily across half-back and the back pocket, he played 28 games in 1913 and 1914, serving as a reliable defender in a side that struggled against professional opposition. His football career was abruptly ended by the outbreak of World War I, where he enlisted and rose to the rank of Captain. Neale is remembered less for his on-field statistics and more for his ultimate sacrifice; awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry, he was killed in action in France in 1918, standing as one of the tragic figures whose loss contributed to the University Football Club never returning to the league.
