Bio
Recruited from Subiaco in the WAFL, Stan Penberthy was a rugged follower and utility who became a key combatant for Footscray throughout the 1930s. Known for his physical presence and versatility, he ascended to the club captaincy in 1936, but his career is best remembered for the unusual circumstances of his final season. Midway through 1937, the sitting Bulldogs captain was abruptly released following internal disputes and cleared to Melbourne in a rare mid-year transfer. Penberthy managed to play for both clubs in the same season, featuring in the Demons' finals campaign just months after leading Footscray, before retiring from VFL football at the end of the year.
