Bio
The son of a Presbyterian minister from Swan Hill, Stan Reid established himself as one of the colony’s finest defenders during Fitzroy’s transition from the VFA to the VFL. A product of Scotch College, he was a physically imposing backman renowned for his strength in the contest, superior high marking, and a penetrating long kick that often cleared danger from the defensive 50. Reid was a key pillar in the Maroons' 1898 premiership side, holding the fort in the back pocket during the club's Grand Final victory over Essendon—a match that would tragically prove to be his last. Following that triumph, he retired from football to become an ordained minister in the Western Australian goldfields before enlisting in the Boer War, where he was killed in action in 1901, leaving a legacy as one of the game's rare combat casualties.
